Obesity Awareness and Education Event to travel from Houston, Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana.
Youth & Adult Obesity and Education Cycling Event April 3-8, 2016.
The Southwest Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventists will be sending 20-25 cyclists, men, and women, on a 533-mile journey from Houston, Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana, Sunday, April 3-8, 2016.
During the event, the cyclists will travel through the beautiful towns, bayous, and back roads of Eastern Texas and Southern Louisiana. This six-day cycling adventure will bring awareness to a growing problem in Texas, Louisiana, and the United States with youth and adult obesity.
Ten out of the 11 states that have increased rates of obesity are located in the south, and children between the ages of 2-19 are recording dangerous levels of obesity and unhealthy lifestyles choices. With these statistics in hand, we have decided to say, "We need to do more." Not only have we organized this cycling event, but we have conducted "Biggest Loser events in Dallas-Fort Worth area, area training rides, Walk/Bike-a-thon events, various cooking shows, and the implementations of health events throughout the region.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church has a strong emphasis on healthy life choices and being active in our communities, so the Southwest Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventists has organized this cycling event to encourage young people and adults to "get moving" and to live better for the future.
We feel that it is our duty to provide leadership examples, committed role models and wise decision making for a healthy future for the youth, adults and the communities we serve.
