On Sept. 24, 2016, Sheryl Buchanan, a member of Grace and Glory Seventh-day Adventist Church in Providence, was named the Rhode Island Adult Educator of the Year at a ceremony held at WaterFire Providence.
Buchanan, adult learning facilitator and evening coordinator at Genesis Center, was selected for this award based on her demonstrated contributions to adult education, the teaching profession, and her impact on student outcomes.
“Teaching chose me,” said Buchanan, after receiving the award. “I am highly blessed and favored to be recognized and awarded.”
Buchanan firmly believes that teaching is her calling; saying that “the Lord has given me this opportunity to demonstrate His love and deep devotion to us despite our faults.”
Her classroom strategy is simple: “Every student that enters my classroom is empowered and constantly reminded that they are each unique and wonderfully made, they must be made aware of how valuable each of them are.”
She added, “Thanks be to God for His many blessing to me, a lowly teacher. I am not only humbled, but feel privileged that He would put such as honor in my path. To God be the glory.”
Buchanan has been Adventist her entire life, and active in church ministry. She is working toward becoming a Master Guide, and will be invested in November.
Governor Gina Raimondo and several other public figures and dignitaries presented Buchanan and about 70 other educators with certificates. Other honorees included the state and district teachers of the year, the superintendent of the year, principals of the year, award-winning educators, and newly certified teachers.
