Chaplain Cory Rowe to Join North American Division’s Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries Team in January 2023

The North American Division’s Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries (ACM)* welcomes the newest member of its team. Starting January 2023, Chaplain Cory Rowe (D. Min, M. Div., BCC) will serve the division as the assistant director for the Southern region. His jurisdiction will include the Southern Union and Puerto Rico, taking over this area from Washington Johnson, ACM director.
“With [Rowe’s] gifts in chaplaincy and background in pastoral ministry, he will complement the Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries team. Most of all, his commitment and dedication to God and eagerness to minister in chaplaincy through the years are well-documented,” said Johnson.
Rowe brings a rich tapestry of experiences to this role. He served in the United States Marine Corps, from which he received the Medal of Good Conduct. Rowe also pastored in the Northeastern and Allegheny West conferences. Notably, he served as the senior pastor of Mamre Seventh-day Adventist Church in New York and clergy liaison for Brooklyn’s 63rd Police Precinct. He was also a local church Prison Ministries leader and the Northeastern Conference’s Men’s Ministries leader. Finally, Rowe sat on the board of trustees for the Good Neighbor House Community Center, which provides health and human services to the underserved in the Dayton, Ohio, Metropolitan Area.
Rowe’s academic background also points to a passion for chaplaincy. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in theology and minor in sociology from Oakwood College. In addition, Rowe graduated with a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary. He also received his chaplaincy endorsement as a healthcare and campus chaplain from Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries (ACM). Moreover, Rowe is a board-certified chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains and the Adventist Chaplaincy Institute.
ACM is split into four regions, covered by different team members. Gilda Roddy, associate director, oversees the Northeast and Canada. William Cork, assistant director, manages the Great Plains; and Angela Li, also an assistant director, handles the Pacific region. As a Spanish speaker, the Panama-born Rowe will add depth to a team with Cantonese, French, and Mandarin speakers. “He’s a part of the mosaic of our office — languages, cultures, and rich experiences,” said Johnson.
Rowe’s most recent appointment was as assistant professor at the Oakwood University School of Theology. There, he was also the coordinator for the Pastoral Care/Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program and the U.S. Army Senior Reserve Officers Training Corps (SROTC) liaison. Currently, Rowe is an EAP chaplain with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Huntsville, Alabama. Outside of work, he is blessed to have been married to his wife, July, for 32 years, with whom he has four children and three grandsons.
“We’re so excited that he’s joining our ACM team and bringing his expertise to oversee the Southern region. We’re already strong, but his addition will make us stronger,” Roddy added with a smile.
