5th May 2017
London ministers were given a ‘back to spiritual basics’ period of training and biblical teaching this week at the annual Core of Adventism. The residential which took place from 3-5 May at De Vere Venue Denham Grove, proved to be very popular with over 60 ministers coming together to refresh their doctrinal and biblical understanding of scripture. This Core residential event is the brainchild of the London Area Advisory Council (LAAC – Pastor Steve Thomas-President), London Minister’s Council (LMC- Pastor David Burnett-President) and BUC PM Director, Pastor Eglan Brooks. It is also supported by the four London Area Coordinators (Pastors Hamilton, Mburani, Esson and Luz) and the PM Department of SEC, Pastor Kirk Thomas. The purpose of the residential is to keep ministers in tune with current biblical thinking and how contemporary issues compare to the core values and teachings of the Church.
The event also gave time for ministers and their spouses to fellowship, encourage and support each other in the ever-challenging task of pastoral ministry.
Guest speakers for the Core meetings that will continue throughout next week include Dr Olive Hemmings, President of the Adventist Society for Religious Studies and Dr L Caesar, Research Professor of Hebrew at Andrews University and Associate Editor of Adventist Review. Their combined experience and knowledge of biblical hermeneutics will provide a positive platform for engagement and theological debate.
In addition to biblical insights, ministers were also given presentations surrounding their personal life in the role of ministry. Dr Curtis Fox, from Atlanta, spoke about ‘Marriage and Ministry Dynamics’, and ‘The Secret Lives of Ministers’, whilst Pastor and Dr Barnes, Directors of Family Ministries for the Northeastern Conference in New York gave practical counsel on nurturing the minister’s home to provide stronger family and marital ties.
