Students, teachers and parents from Landsdale Christian School (Western Australia) raised a total of $A2200 for the Leukaemia Foundation on March 31 when they gathered to witness Year 10 student Shantel Cobb participate in the World’s Greatest Shave.
Miss Cobb’s hair was first braided so it could be chopped off and donated to make a wig. School chaplain Pastor Gys Seegers then auctioned off each braid to raise a total of nearly $600. A local hairdresser then shaved her head into a pixie style.
“Shantel inspired many students at school today to do something special for others,” said Pastor Seegers. “We’re facing times of uncertainty right now so celebrating good news stories and being generous is exactly what we need.”
The whole student body also celebrated the occasion by participating in a crazy hair day, and enjoyed a pancake breakfast hosted by Embrace Seventh-day Adventist Church, who meet on the school grounds.
“I’m really impressed with Shantel and I’d love to see more events like this at school,” said school principal Dr Lee Walker. “I believe engaging with the community is an important part of school life and our best opportunity is when people are in need.”
